Connect Claude to Shopify: Edit Your Theme From the AI You Already Use

If Claude is already where you think, write and code, the natural next step is letting it touch your actual store: read your theme, edit sections, preview the result. That connection exists, it takes about a minute to set up, and the free tier covers real work.

This guide shows how it works and what you can do once connected.

What connecting Claude to Shopify actually means

Claude on its own can write Liquid code, but it can't see your theme, so you end up copy-pasting files back and forth and hoping nothing breaks. The fix is MCP (Model Context Protocol), the open standard that lets AI assistants use external tools.

Clyro ships a Shopify MCP server: connect it to Claude and your assistant gets 13 tools against your real theme workspace: reading files, searching, editing Liquid and JSON, managing templates, generating previews. You talk to Claude normally; Claude does the work in your store's theme.

Setting it up

The short version (the MCP docs have per-client steps):

  1. Create a free Clyro account and open your theme workspace: import your existing theme or start from a base.
  2. Add the MCP server in Claude (Settings, Connectors): paste Clyro's MCP URL and authorize with your account. Claude Code, Cursor, Codex and other MCP clients connect with the same URL.
  3. Ask for what you want. "Make the announcement bar dismissible." "Add a size guide block to the product page." Claude reads the theme, makes the edit, and you check the preview.

No API keys to manage manually, no local setup: the OAuth flow handles access.

What you can do from Claude

  • Edit any file: Liquid sections, snippets, JSON templates, CSS, JS.
  • Search and understand the theme: "where is the sticky header implemented?"
  • Restructure pages: add, remove and reorder sections on templates.
  • Preview changes before anything ships to your store.
  • Export: download the theme or push it through Clyro when you're happy.

The point is less any single edit and more the loop: you stay in one conversation, and the store keeps up with your thinking.

Is it free?

Yes, genuinely: every Clyro account, including the free plan, gets 300 MCP requests a week at zero credit cost. Connecting Claude or ChatGPT to your theme costs nothing to try, and day-to-day edits fit comfortably in the quota.

Frequently asked questions

Does this work with ChatGPT and Cursor too? Yes. Any MCP-capable client works: Claude, Claude Code, ChatGPT, Cursor, Codex, Copilot, OpenCode. Same URL, same tools.

Can Claude break my live store? You work against a theme workspace with previews, not your live theme directly. Changes reach the store only when you push or install the exported theme.

Do I need to know Liquid? No. Describing what you want is enough; the tools handle the code. Knowing Liquid just makes your requests more precise.

Is this Shopify's official MCP? No, it's Clyro's server, built for theme work specifically. It's what makes "Claude, edit my store" a real workflow today. Setup details: Shopify MCP server docs.
